Pre-Approved COMM Relateds

Related Courses

All CLAS majors require the Related Group requirement. At least 12 credits 2000-level or above in courses closely related to the student’s major, but outside the major department, make up the related group. Courses used to satisfy the Related Group Requirement for Communication Majors (“Relateds”) can be tailored to the unique academic interests and career goals of the student.

For a course toward the Communication Related requirement, the course must meet the following criteria:

1. The course must be taken at the 2000 level or higher; and

2. The course must contain content that is relevant to the Communication discipline and share a common curricular focus with Communication study; and

3. The following courses DO NOT count as they are cross-listed with Communication:

  • LLAS 3320 (COMM 3320) – Media and Diverse Audiences
  • LLAS 3321 (COMM 3321) – Latinas and Media
  • LLAS 3322 (COMM 3322) – Soap Opera/Telenovela
  • PSYC 3241 (COMM 3241) – Motivation and Emotion
  • WGSS 3210 (COMM 3210) – Gender and Communication

In the interest of facilitating student selection of Related coursework, the COMM Advising Office has approved the following additional policies specifying the courses that may be used to satisfy the Related Group requirement.

A.    ALL courses from the following departments are PRE-APPROVED as Relateds:

B.    Concurrent Plans of Study:  Coursework taken to complete a concurrent MINOR, DOUBLE MAJOR or ADDITIONAL DEGREE  (through a Major from another UConn School) will be approved to satisfy the Related Group Requirement for the Communication Major.

  • If a course is NOT from the list of pre-approved departments, part of a concurrent Minor or Major, or in the list of pre-approved individual courses, you must complete a Related Approval Request Form.
  • Please note that courses approved through the Related Approval Request form will NOT appear on your advisement report as satisfying the “Related Group” requirement. When you apply to graduate (through Student Admin), you will note these courses (each by course catalog number) in the “Comments” section of your “Final Plan of Study” online submission. The academic advisor will note their approval of the courses listed in the student’s Comment, when the Final Plan of Study is approved during the graduation application process.
